There is no lake at Lake of the Woods. Florence Cuddy named the place in 1925 when she and her husband subdivided the east end of their ranch, hoping the springs and the stream out of Cuddy Valley would fill a pond behind a small dam. It did, some years, and then the dam burst in 1962 and the lake has been dry since. What stayed is a community of cabins and small houses at about 5,100 feet along Frazier Mountain Park Road, between Frazier Park and the climb to Cuddy Valley.
The housing is older and close together, much of it on piers, and Cuddy Creek still runs through in a wet year.

Rebuild permits for this unincorporated community go through Kern County Public Works, which keeps an office a mile down the road in Frazier Park.
